In 1974, to mark major upgrades to the Arecibo Radio Telescope, the most powerful broadcast ever deliberately beamed into space was made from Puerto Rico. An experiment by SETI, the transmission consisted of a simple, pictorial message, including images of the Arecibo telescope, our solar system, DNA, a stick figure of a human, and some of the biochemicals of earthly life. In 2001, a crop formation appearing to be a reply to the Arecibo Message, was discovered by the Chilbolton radio telescope in Hampshire, England.For more details on the “Arecibo Message,” follow this link.
