Technology: are cell phones essential to living nowadays?

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of cell phone owners now use their phone to go online, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.  We call them “cell internet users” and define them as anyone who uses their cell phone to access the internet or use email. Because 91% of all Americans now own a cell phone, this means that 57% of all American adults are cell internet users. (read more)

Of the 82% of adults today who are cell phone users, 43% have software applications or “apps” on their phones.  When taken as a portion of the entire U.S. adult population, that equates to 35% who have cell phones with apps.  (read more)

What's the first thing you did when you woke up this morning? If you're a smartphone owner, then about one-third of you -- if you're a representative sample -- picked up your Android-based phone or iPhone and logged in to one of the many apps you've installed. While cellphones have long doubled as alarm clocks for many owners, a new survey out from Ericsson ConsumerLab found that 35 percent of smartphone owners in the U.S. open up a non-voice application before removing the covers.
