Research: Women feel fabulous at fifty! Three quarters say they feel more confident in their fifth decade than they did in their 20's

The old saying goes that life begins at 40, but now British women are feeling more fit and fabulous in their fifth decade, it seems.

After a lifetime of diets and body hang-ups, three quarters of women (76 per cent) feel more self-assured in their 50s than they did in their 20s, reveals a new study.

A third in their 50s (36 per cent) are happier than ever with their looks and one in seven (16 per cent) feel fitter and sexier than ever.

In fact, almost half (47 per cent) are so happy they love their body more now than they did in their 20s.

The research, of 40 to 74 year olds, found women in their fifth decade have stopped calorie counting and turned to exercise to stay in shape.

A third of women (33 per cent) have started to work out more in their 50s and 15 per cent are feeling more energised as a result.

Meanwhile, 45 per cent ditched diets for good on turning 50.

What's more, two thirds of women (66 per cent) spend less time and money on personal grooming once they hit 50.

Research: people decide to trust you within seconds

Scientists have discovered that it only takes saying 'hello' for someone to decide whether or not you can be trusted.

Researchers at Glasgow University have found that it takes around half a second to make a good first impression.

They discovered that people judge someone on how trustworthy or how dominant they are within the first 500 milliseconds of hearing their voice.

Psychologists from universities of Glasgow and Princeton in the US, have shown that a simple 'hello' is enough to allow most people to draw conclusions about personality type.

They also found that people will make these judgements, including how attractive they are, without seeing the person to whom we are speaking.

The findings echo a classic line in the film Jerry Maguire, starring Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger.

At the end of the film, when Jerry expresses his love in a long-winded speech to Dorothy, she replies with the simple phrase: 'You had me at hello.'

A study played recordings of people saying 'hello' and asked test subjects to rank them according to 10 pre-defined personality traits including trustworthiness, dominance, attractiveness and warmth.

The study found that most of the recorded voices elicited the same response from participants and that these opinions were formed rapidly, after hearing the voices for only 300-500msecs.

This suggests that the tone of voice you use when saying 'hello' directly and immediately informs the first impression of the person to whom you are speaking.

The most important traits identified were trustworthiness and dominance.

The study found that males who raised their tone and women who alternated the pitch of their voices are seen as more trustworthy.

Dominance is partly indicated by lowering the pitch, but more so by changes in 'formant dispersion', which are adjustments of your voice caused by the structure of your throat.

The fact that the human mind is capable of coming to these conclusions so quickly and irrespective of visual cues implies that this is an ability that may have evolved in our recent history when decisions on who to trust and approach were crucial to our species' survival.

Dr Phil McAleer, from the Voice Neurocognition Laboratory, Glasgow University, who led the study, said: 'It is amazing that from such short bursts of speech you can get such a definite impression of a person.

'And more so that, irrespective of whether it is accurate, your impression is the same as what the other listeners get.

'It is perhaps also consistent that we are most attuned to recognising signs of trustworthiness and dominance, two traits that would have been central to our survival as we evolved.'

This research promises to help in the drive to improve the efficiency of voice-operated systems and learning aids, and to shed new light on the automatic judgments we make about strangers we don't meet face to face - from conductors making announcements on trains to business people making 'cold calls'.

Research: Mushrooms kills the sexually transmitted virus HPV

Everyone knows that mushrooms are a nutritious and low-calorie addition to a meal but now new research suggests they could also combat cancer.

An extract from a Japanese mushroom kills the sexually transmitted virus HPV that can cause cervical cancer.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a common, and highly contagious, infection that affects skin and the moist membrane linings of the body, for example, in the cervix, mouth and throat.

More than three quarters of all women acquire the virus during their lives and some strains can cause cervical cancer.

But American research found the extract active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) – which is found in shiitake mushrooms - may play a role in preventing HPV-related cancers.

In a study using mice, AHCC led to the eradication of HPV within 90 days.

It also decreased the rate of cervical tumour growth.

AHCC is a common food supplement and the researchers say it could eventually replace HPV vaccines.

Associate professor Dr Judith Smith, of the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School, said: ‘The results of this study were very encouraging.

‘This study, initiated in 2008, shows that by itself AHCC has the potential to treat the HPV infection.’

AHCC works as an immunotherapy, which is a treatment that uses a body's own immune system to help fight disease.

Human and lab studies have shown that AHCC increases the number and activity of Natural Killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells, and cytokines, which enable the body to effectively respond to infections and block the proliferation of tumours.

HPV DNA has been detected in 99.7 per cent of cervical cancer biopsies, yielding the largest causative relationship of any cancer.

Several other types of cancer are also HPV related, including 95 per cent of anal cancers, 60 per cent of throat cancers, 65 per cent of vaginal cancers, 50 per cent of vulvar cancers and 35 per cent of penile cancers.

Do we need another tenure on Clintons in white house?

Kathleen Willey, his former aide, accused former President Bill Clinton of sexually harassing her. Now she says America 'deserves better' than another Clinton presidency.

Just weeks after publicly claiming that former first lady Hillary Clinton was waging a 'war on women' by enabling her husband's philandering ways, the aide who accused the former president of groping her in the White House has penned an article for a far-right-wing blog under the headline 'America Deserves Better Than the Clintons.'

Kathleen Willey was a Democratic fundraiser volunteering in the White House during Bill Clinton's presidency who claims the former president kissed and groped her inside a private study off of the Oval Office.

Now, with a potential presidential run by Hillary Clinton in the works, Willey has resurfaced to warn the American public about the 'dysfunctional' former first family.

The basis for much of Willey's latest criticism of the Clintons stems from Hillary Clinton's handling of the attack in Benghazi, Libya, that led to the deaths of four Americans, including ambassador Chris Stevens.

'The last time we saw Hillary Clinton as our secretary of state, she was testifying before a congressional committee about Benghazi,' Willey writes in the column published on WND.com. 'During that meeting on Jan. 22, 2013, we heard her shriek, “What difference does it make?"

'Earlier, right before one of the presidential debates, on Oct. 15, 2012, Hillary stated during a series of interviews that she, as secretary of state, was responsible for the security of the embassy staff. “The buck stops here.”

'I remember being so surprised when I heard it, but I was immediately suspicious,' Willey concludes.

Willey qualifies her shock by claiming that 'taking responsibility for anything is rare' for the Clintons.

She goes on to say the former secretary of state knows more than she's willing to reveal about the Benghazi attack.

'If it is revealed that she played a major part in the demise of our four patriots, as we suspect she did, she might want to consider retreating from public life once and for all and, together with her husband, play the role of senior stateswoman,' she writes.

Willey concludes her commentary by simply stating that 'we deserve better' than the Clintons.

In February, Willey made claims that when she was secretary of state, Hillary Clinton orchestrated a series of investigations designed to discredit the many women who have claimed her husband sexually assaulted them

'The point is what this woman is capable of doing to other women while she's running a campaign, basically, on women's issues,' she said. 'It just doesn't make any sense.'

'She single-handedly orchestrated every one of the investigations of all these women.'

Research - Health and Aging: Build muscle and you'll live longer

New UCLA research suggests that the more muscle mass older Americans have, the less likely they are to die prematurely. The findings add to the growing evidence that overall body composition -- and not the widely used body mass index, or BMI -- is a better predictor of all-cause mortality.

The study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, is the culmination of previous UCLA research led by Dr. Preethi Srikanthan, an assistant clinical professor in the endocrinology division at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, that found that building muscle mass is important in decreasing metabolic risk.

"As there is no gold-standard measure of body composition, several studies have addressed this question using different measurement techniques and have obtained different results," Srikanthan said. "So many studies on the mortality impact of obesity focus on BMI. Our study indicates that clinicians need to be focusing on ways to improve body composition, rather than on BMI alone, when counseling older adults on preventative health behaviors."

The researchers analyzed data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III, conducted between 1988 and 1994. They focused on a group of 3,659 individuals that included men who were 55 or older and women who were 65 or older at the time of the survey. The authors then determined how many of those individuals had died from natural causes based on a follow-up survey done in 2004.

The body composition of the study subjects was measured using bioelectrical impedance, which involves running an electrical current through the body. Muscle allows the current to pass more easily than fat does, due to muscle's water content. In this way, the researchers could determine a muscle mass index -- the amount of muscle relative to height -- similar to a body mass index. They looked at how this muscle mass index was related to the risk of death. They found that all-cause mortality was significantly lower in the fourth quartile of muscle mass index compared with the first quartile.
"In other words, the greater your muscle mass, the lower your risk of death," said Dr. Arun Karlamangla, an associate professor in the geriatrics division at the Geffen School and the study's co-author. "Thus, rather than worrying about weight or body mass index, we should be trying to maximize and maintain muscle mass."

This study does have some limitations. For instance, one cannot definitively establish a cause-and-effect relationship between muscle mass and survival using a cohort study such as NHANES III. "But we can say that muscle mass seems to be an important predictor of risk of death," Srikanthan said. In addition, bioelectrical impedance is not the most advanced measurement technique, though the NHANES III measurements were conducted in a very rigorous fashion "and practically, this is the best situation possible in a study of this size," she noted.

"Despite these limitations, this study establishes the independent survival prediction ability of muscle mass as measured by bioelectrical impedance in older adults, using data from a large, nationally representative cohort," Srikanthan and Karlamangla write, adding that BMI's association with mortality in older adults has proven inconsistent. "We conclude that measurement of muscle mass relative to body height should be added to the toolbox of clinicians caring for older adults. Future research should determine the type and duration of exercise interventions that improve muscle mass and potentially increase survival in (healthy), older adults."

GCR: Why the Vietnamese Dong will Revalue

Vietnam has achieved a truly remarkable thing.  While being a dumping ground for U.S. dollar inflation and having its own currency consistently devalued, Vietnam has managed to produce one of the fastest economic expansions and modernizations in the history of the world.  It’s a model of modernization built upon the experience and lessons of China, Korea, and other Asian countries which developed before it.

The modernization of Europe and the Americas took centuries.  The modernization of China was achieved in approximately 50 years.  Compare that to the astonishing modernization which only began in Vietnam in the mid 1990’s.  In less than 20 years, the country has turned from a destitute population on the verge of starvation to an expanding middle class that is considered by all economic indicators to be the fastest such expansion in the world.

In true Confucian fashion, Vietnam utilized the tactics of economic warfare deployed against it as a tool of economic development.  The exchange rate of the dong was devalued on a continually basis to encourage use of the U.S. dollar within the country.  This ensured another market for the dollars inflation to be sent to avoid a hyper-inflation situation back home.

In addition, the Vietnamese understood the economic potential of their resources and trade capability.  The strategy was one of patience and long term gain for short term detriment.

Vietnam is much more than the story of an American war of aggression or gold theft.  For our purposes here, we will start our brief history with the Multilateral Co-Operation Agreement made between the NATO Countries (except Ireland) in January of 1950.  The purpose of this agreement was to control the type and level of trade between the western world and the communist world.

South Vietnam held the largest agricultural potential while the North held most of the heavy industry, such as coal, steel, tin, and phosphate fertilizer.  The full potential of the offshore oil and gas fields was still unknown.

There were many reasons for the western involvement in Vietnam which began many years before, with the French, and later America.  The threat of communism was a smoke screen for something else which we will not touch on here as the scale of it will only serve to dwarf this essay on currency revaluation.  There is also the Yamashita gold theft and recovery attempt which we touched on in America’s Karma and World War Two Gold Theft.  During the time period between WW2 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991, Vietnam depended on economic subsidies from the larger communist state.  When these subsidies ended, trade with the United States became very important for Vietnam.

Over the years there have been many variations of the dong currency with varying exchange rates.  The different forms of structure to the dong have been the following:

- Commercial Currency
- Non-Commercial Currency
- Official Rate
- Convertible Currency
- Effective Rate
- Auction Fixing (this structure becomes important in 1991)
- It’s too much too breakdown and cover each currency type and its value fluctuations over the years so we will focus in on the important dates and valuations.

On December 18, 1971, after the U.S. dollar devaluation, the official exchange rate of the dong was 2.71 per 1 dollar.

On February 13, 1973, after another U.S. dollar devaluation, the official exchange rate was 2.44 per 1 dollar.

On May 3, 1978, a uniform dong was introduced at an exchange rate of 2.17 per 1 dollar.  It’s interesting to note that during this time period the dong to dollar exchange rate was maintained within a narrow margin while the SDR rate for the dong was allowed to fluctuate.  This SDR fluctuation was a foreshadowing of things yet to come in our present time.  See SDR’s and the New Bretton Woods.

On July 6, 1981 the exchange rate was VND 9.045 per 1 dollar.

On Sept 14, 1985, the State Bank of Vietnam was authorized to issue a new dong currency and withdraw the old ones from circulation.  One old dong got you 10 new dong. The new exchange rate was set at 15 dong to 1 dollar.

Devaluation of the dong continued throughout the 1980’s which was actually encouraging what little trade Vietnam participated in.

On March 13, 1989 the multiple currency structure as outlined above was ended and a unified currency structure was put in place.  The commercial dong and non-commercial dong were merged and the exchange rate was set at 4500 dong per 1 dollar.  This was 9 months before the Berlin Wall began its fall which lead to the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.  Remember that Vietnam depended on subsidies from the U.S.S.R.  Perhaps this constitutes a slow transition from subsidies to light import and exports.

On August 30, 1991 there was put in place a method of foreign exchange auction, which was only allowed in U.S. dollars, to support banks and trade organizations helping economic interests needing such foreign exchanges.  This move created the inflation dumping grounds for the U.S. dollar.

The rate of the dong today is approximately 21,000 to 1 dollar.

Back in the year 1975 Vietnam wanted to exploit its rich agricultural and timber resources in the South and develop its coal production in the North, as well as producing oil and gas from its offshore fields.  Unfortunately for Vietnam they were under a trade embargo from the United States.  The Export Administration Act of 1969, amended in 1979, restricted the export and/or re-export of technology which originated in America.  The embargo was only on North Vietnam at first but was extended to the South in 1975.

Post war Vietnam is one of only a handful of countries that did not experience a reconstruction boom after hostilities ended.  In fact, they experienced a drastic economic deterioration.  Through economic sanctions, a ban on imports to Vietnam produced a shortage of foreign exchange capital required for the reconstruction process.   Sanctions also lead to extremely high unemployment in the export industries and a reduced industrial capacity.

A similar ban on exports deprived the country of the essential commodities required for development and growth.  It also denied Vietnam access to foreign capital markets to raise funds for building factories and other industrial facilities.

Exports to communist countries were considered a violation of America’s strategic interest.  The embargo even blocked aid from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.  Vietnam, to its credit, did the only thing it could do by focusing on exporting natural resources and cheap labor to a handful of countries that stood in violation of the embargo.  This was a bare sustenance strategy by Vietnam which did not eliminate starvation and destitution in the country.

Throughout this time period Vietnam was subjected to typhoons, floods, and droughts which served to severely hinder its attempts at food grain production.  This weather caused considerable damage to Vietnam’s agricultural lands.

It brings into question the use of weather manipulation weapons which may have been used against the country.  For those who doubt the reality of such weapons, I suggest you ask yourself why Defense Secretary William Cohen stated the existence of weather and earthquake causing weapons in his speech given at a 1997 Conference on Terrorism in Athens, GA.  I will leave this area to the reader for further exploration.

When the Cold War finally ended many American business interests wanted the sanctions lifted immediately so as to capitalize on the virgin market.  But the U.S. would not lift them.

But with the low exchange rate of the dong to dollar, other countries couldn’t resist the lure of doing business in Vietnam and making the windfall on the other end.  Countries that began investing in Vietnamese imports and exports were:

Google enhances encryption technology for email

Google has enhanced the encryption technology for its flagship email service in ways that will make it harder for the National Security Agency to intercept messages moving among the company's worldwide data centers.

Among the most extraordinary disclosures in documents leaked by former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden were reports that the NSA had secretly tapped into the main communications links that connect Yahoo and Google data centers around the world.

Google, whose executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, said in November that he was outraged over the practice, didn't mention the NSA in Thursday's announcement, except in a veiled reference to "last summer's revelations." The change affects more than 425 million users of Google's Gmail service.

Yahoo has promised similar steps for its email service by this spring.

Google and other technology companies have been outspoken about the U.S. government's spy programs. The companies are worried more people will reduce their online activities if they believe almost everything they do is being monitored by the government. A decline in Internet use could hurt the companies financially by giving them fewer opportunities to show online ads and sell other services.

"Your email is important to you, and making sure it stays safe and always available is important to us," Nicolas Lidzborski, Gmail's security engineering lead, wrote in a blog post.

Lidzborski said that all Gmail messages a consumer sends or receives are now encrypted.

"This ensures that your messages are safe not only when they move between you and Gmail's servers, but also as they move between Google's data centers — something we made a top priority after last summer's revelations," Lidzborski wrote.

The NSA has said it only focuses on targets with foreign intelligence value.

A secret Jan. 9, 2013, accounting indicated that NSA sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the NSA's Fort Meade, Maryland, headquarters, according to documents released by Snowden and obtained by The Washington Post last year.

The NSA's principal tool to exploit the Google and Yahoo data links is a project called MUSCULAR, operated jointly with the agency's British counterpart, GCHQ. NSA and GCHQ are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants, the Post reported.

Vatican library plans to digitise 82,000 of its most valuable manuscripts

A rare Roman manuscript featuring the poems of Virgil dating back to 400AD is among thousands of historic items the Vatican’s library plans to publish online.

Vatican Apostolic Library, founded in 1451 and considered one of the world’s most important research libraries, is hoping in the next four years to archive its entire collection of 82,000 manuscripts, comprising more than 41 million pages.

The €8 million (£7 million) project will mean that the Roman Catholic Church’s most precious documents will be available to the public for the first time.

The library announced on Thursday that it will work with experts from the Japanese IT systems specialist NTT Data Corporation, to digitalise 3,000 handwritten works by 2018. While the library has already begun to digitalise around 6,000 manuscripts, the collaboration is designed to enhance current archiving methods with special measures that will improve long-term storage and safekeeping. It will also speed up search methods and broaden access for academics and scholars.

The library was founded by Pope Nicholas V in the 15th century and has one of the finest collections of manuscripts, books, photographs, coins and medals in the world.

It inspired the Renaissance master Raphael and has been kept in the Vatican library, known as the “Popes’ library”, since 1600.

Toshio Iwamoto, the president of NTT Data at the Vatican, said the project would help “preserve valuable treasures of mankind”.

What do the Global Currency Revaluation (RV), Missing Malaysia Plane, & New IRS Rules Have in Common?

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted today to include the 2010 IMF Reforms in the Ukraine aid bill.  It will now go to the Senate for vote.

If it passes there it will then be required to pass in the House of Representatives.

It is assumed that all of this will have to transpire by end of day Friday, which is when Congress goes on a short recess.

  Additionally, the referendum over Crimean annexation takes place this weekend.  The United States will surely want to make a statement before then.

The bill also includes weak sanctions on both Ukraine and Russia for violations of human rights against government protestors.  This is merely for distraction purposes.

With Europe slowly and quietly sidestepping in Russia’s direction, and Ukrainian officials themselves stating that there will be no response from them over the annexation of Crimea, this whole charade is beginning to have the same feel as Syria 2013.

Let’s watch for the slow withdrawal of this matter from the media as the slight of hand directs our attention away from Ukraine and towards another hot spot revolution or sovereign debt crisis.

Its not clear yet if the Internal Revenue Service’s proposed rule governing 501(c)(4) groups was included in the same bill.  This proposed rule has been attached to the IMF 2010 Reforms up until now and there is no reason to think that it still isn’t.

For those who don’t know yet, this IRS rule change will severely restrict freedom of speech in America in staggered time segments leading up to elections.  It will prevent non-profit groups from expressing opinions on politicians before elections.

What the IRS and Treasury have to do with the expression of political opinions is one which should unsettle most Americans.  See comments sections of SDR’s and the New Bretton Woods – Part Nine.

There is very little information or attention given to this proposed IRS rule change, which I find surprising considering the volume of web based political dissent taking place right now against the US government.

Perhaps some sites are not what they profess to be.  I will leave this area for others to research as I’m more focused on the IMF Reforms and the coming changes to the world financial system.

Once the IMF 2010 Code of Reforms are passed we will hear very little of it in the media, if any.  The shift or de-pegging of the worlds currencies and commodities from the US dollar and to the Special Drawing Right of the International Monetary Fund will be well hidden within the “solutions” to the sovereign debt crisis in the world.

The television will bombard us with opinions and pointless debate on how the governments of the world have  been irresponsible with debt creation.  Not once will they explain how debt creation actually works and how capital is injected into the economy.

A pattern I see unfolding over the coming years is one where an opinion of flawed governments is pushed upon the masses and the importance or economic genius of central banks is peppered about like so much other idiotic office banter.

Governments will be blamed for the sovereign debt and currency crisis and central banks will be kindly referred to as the solution providers.  Watch for the social status of central bank leaders to increase across all media forms.

The so called crisis in the Ukraine is a perfect example of the Hegelian Dialectic Triad of problem/reaction/solution which we have been discussing on this site.  What we are beginning to see is a multi-level micro and macro Hegelian approach to implement the new multilateral financial system.

 We will shortly move to the next crisis and solution.  Watch for the trend of sameness in the solutions.  It will always be further centralization of the system at the macro level.

Interestingly enough, we will also begin to see more of the decentralization at the local micro level.  This will ensure a balance of both macro and micro levels of the emerging system.  The attempt is to restrict or self-limit the wealth transfer activities of the rent seeking elite.

 I would suggest readers have a good understanding of the previous articles on this site in order to fully grasp the complexity of what we are stating here.

This balance between micro and macro to restrict corruption will most likely only be temporary as a “corruption of the process” is a natural component of the human condition.

As with any new system, there is an algorithm or code which makes up its invisible structure.  As perfect as we make these codes, they also eventually corrupt.

The new multilateral financial system and its SDR pegging component must have one of the most incredible algorithmic codes ever written.  It must have taken years and countless minds to structure its intricacy and complexity.  This we can reason as a logical extension or required skeleton of any new financial system.

Think back on last year and all the stock market system faults and glitches.  Think of the length of time it would take to install this algorithm onto specific servers and run real time tests to ensure functionality.  Think of how all the stock markets are being purchased by ICE.  Think further consolidation and centralization.

As we are obviously getting closer to the implementation of this multilateral system, I would question the significance and coincidence of 20 employees of the company Freescale Semiconductor being on the Malaysian Airlines flight that is now missing.

Additionally, most, if not all of the banker “suicides” which have been taking place over the last few months have involved individuals who were directly involved in IT departments or other algorithmic points of contact within their respective banks.

My intention is not to promote conspiracy theories or distract away from the main theme of this site, but only to draw attention to a very interesting side piece to the implementation of this emerging multilateral system.  Life has taught me that coincidences are usually anything but that.

It is among the largest object ever spotted in the Universe - and has a diameter more than 1300 times that of our Sun.

Dubbed a 'hypergiant', the yellow star was part of a unique double double star system, with the second component so close that it is in contact with the main star - making it look rather like a table tennis bat.

Astronomers say the find is unique - and could help explain how stars interact.
It was spotted by ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer, and is the largest yellow star — and one of the ten largest stars found so far.

Observations spanning over sixty years, some from amateur observers, also indicate that this rare and remarkable object is changing very rapidly and has been caught during a very brief phase of its life.
'The new observations also showed that this star has a very close binary partner, which was a real surprise,' says Olivier Chesneau, who led the research.

'The two stars are so close that they touch and the whole system resembles a gigantic peanut.'

The astronomers made use of a technique called interferometry to combine the light collected from multiple individual telescopes, effectively creating a giant telescope up to 140 metres in size.

Yellow hypergiants are very rare, with only a dozen or so known in our galaxy — the best-known example being Rho Cassiopeiae.

They are among the biggest and brightest stars known and are at a stage of their lives when they are unstable and changing rapidly.

Due to this instability, yellow hypergiants also expel material outwards, forming a large, extended atmosphere around the star.

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of cell phone owners now use their phone to go online, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.  We call them “cell internet users” and define them as anyone who uses their cell phone to access the internet or use email. Education boosts brain function long after school, study shows

Education significantly improves mental functioning in seniors even four decades after finishing school, shows a new study. The study shows that people who attended school for longer periods performed better in terms of cognitive functioning than those who did not. Using data from individuals aged around 60, the researchers found a positive impact of schooling on memory scores. The fact that young people or their parents did not choose whether to go longer to school strongly suggests that schooling is the cause rather than personal characteristics that would affect this choice and could also explain the differences in cognitive function.

European populations are growing older on average, a trend that could pose serious challenges to health care, budgets, and economic growth. As a greater proportion of a country's population grows into old age, average cognition levels and national productivity tend to decline, and the incidence of dementia increases.

"Finding ways to improve the cognition of seniors is of central importance to the economic well-being of aging countries," says IIASA researcher Vegard Skirbekk, who worked on the study with researchers Nicole Schneeweis and Rudolf Winter Ebmer at Linz University.

The study examined variation in years of schooling arising from compulsory educational reforms implemented in six European countries during the 1950s and 1960s, measuring mental functioning in seniors with various levels of schooling. It shows that the burden of demographic change is likely to depend more on how healthy and mentally fit people are at different ages than on the exact age structure of people in a population. The study also shows that education tends to significantly boost brain function, and that this effect persists as a person ages.

The study shows that people who attended school for longer periods because of new regulations performed better in terms of cognitive functioning than those who did not. Using data from individuals aged around 60 from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe, the researchers found a positive impact of schooling on memory scores. The fact that young people or their parents did not choose whether to go longer to school strongly suggests that schooling is the cause rather than personal characteristics that would affect this choice and could also explain the differences in cognitive function.

"Examining the variation in compulsory schooling was key." It allowed us to find out that education was the cause of better cognitive function, and not a simple correlation,"," says Winter-Ebmer.
Furthermore, the study finds evidence for a protective effect of schooling for the brain: more education slows cognitive decline. The researchers say that education can be an important measure for maintaining cognitive functioning and protecting against cognitive decline, thereby  alleviating the challenges that population aging would otherwise present.

Research: Loneliness and feeling unloved TWICE as likely to kill you as being fat... as scientists warn against elderly retiring to sunnier climes

Being lonely in later life could be worse for your health than obesity, according to research.

Feeling cut off from others can push blood pressure up into the danger zone for heart attacks and strokes, weaken the immune system and raise the risk of depression, a conference was told.

The US researchers urged those in middle-age to think about how they are going to stay socially active in old age – and warned against retiring to the sun.

John Cacioppo, a professor of psychology who has spent 20 years studying the impact of loneliness, tracked the health of more than 2,000 men and women aged 50-plus for six years.

The loneliest men and women were almost twice as likely to die during that period than those who felt the most wanted and needed. Another study found loneliness to be twice as deadly as obesity.

Feeling cut off from others can push blood pressure up into the danger zone for heart attacks and strokes, weaken the immune system and raise the odds of depression, the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference heard.

It can also disrupt sleep, leaving people feeling lethargic the next day and more likely to rely on sleeping tablets.

Professor Cacioppo, of the University of Chicago, has shown that we don’t sleep less when we are lonely – we just wake up more.

It is thought that if we feel isolated were are extra-alert to threats and so wake up at the slightest noise.

The warnings come as Britain faces the twin challenge of an ageing population and an increasingly fragmented society, in which many people communicate over the internet rather than face-to-face.

Professor Cacioppo said: ‘We are experiencing a silver tsunami demographically.  The baby boomers are reaching retirement age. People have to think about how to protect themselves.’

He suggests the retired stay in touch with former colleagues and stay near their family – and advises against a new start in the sun.

The professor said: ‘We have mythic notions of retirement.  We think that retirement means leaving friends and family and buying a place where it is warm and living happily ever after. But that’s probably not the best idea.

‘We find people who continue to interact with coworkers after retirement and have friends close by are less lonely. Take time to enjoy yourself and share good times with family and friends. Non-lonely people enjoy themselves with other people.’

The conference also heard that it is not physical isolation in itself but the sense of isolation that is damaging. In other words, it is possible to feel lonely despite being married or surrounded by people.

NYC plans to recycle garbage and create parks, innovation in recycling

Radical plan to create giant 'garbage islands' off Manhattan which double as public parks

A plan to install giant 'garbage islands' to process waste off Manhattan have been revealed - with public parks on top of them.

The parks would have organic gardens, parkland and even cross country ski areas for the winter, adding 125 acres of park to New York.

Beneath them, composting areas would process our organic waste, estimated to be 30% of NY's residential waste, with ships ferrying waste in and compost out of the islands.

Present Architecture, the firm behind the plans, say it could provide much needed green space to New York.

'This proposal will create a network of composting parks processing our organic waste (30% of our residential
waste stream), while adding 125 acres of public park land.

'This means drastically reduced truck miles to landfills, decreased traffic, noise, and pollution, with the added benefits of safer streets, cleaner air, and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

'Plus a new type of public park and a product for market – nutrient rich compost made in NYC.'

The islands would have waste delivered by trucks, with each borough having its own island to reduce the distances trucks have to travel.

Once processed, barges and rail transport finished compost away.

The firm claims that having having a composting hub in each borough addresses 'borough equity' in waste management.

'This ensures that every borough is responsible for processing its own waste instead of sending the entire city’s trash to one or two over-burdened borough,' it said.

It hopes the city will back the plans.

'New York City is already piloting a curbside composting program, so composting will soon be a reality.

'The Green Loop will take this reality many steps into the future for a better NYC for everyone.'

Iraq's GDP growth for 2012 was 11.1% Reuters reported that Iraq is the 2nd fastest growing economy in 2012 with $170 billion. Excluding the oil sector the economy is expected to grow by at least 9.4%. The latest report to US Congress forecasts Iraq's GDP growth 3x that of the next strongest MENA economy. In the 70s when Iraq's currency held a much higher value GDP only ranged from $2 billion - $8 billion.

I don't think we should underestimate Iraq's wealth. Even excluding the oil sector the economy is expected to grow by at least 9.4%. Let's not forget that oil is quickly becoming second in Iraq to gold. Early in 2012 there was a large discovery of Gold in eastern Baghdad. The last couple years have produced large quantities of gold atoms in the soil through their vast drilling operations.

They actually raised thousands of tons of dust, which was set aside for the purification and extraction process. This discovery, among others, could turn Iraq into a producer of gold more than oil. It has also will increase the prices of real estate due to the influx of gold job seekers.

Iraq currently has $60 billion in foreign currency reserves. In the 70s, when their former currency boasted a much larger value, Iraq's foreign reserves were only 35 billion. As CBI reserves grow, so does their credibility.

I'm not here to prove to you that Iraq will RV but I have come to the conclusion (after over 2 years of non stop research) that the NID will reach former levels the former IQD saw decades prior. Check out these documents and I'm sure you will come to a similar conclusion. 

Iraq has many options and there is no doubt it's just a matter of time (in my opinion of course). I also recognize that the CBI has many options and I certainly don't have the arrogance to pretend to know which options they will choose. I do think this will be our year though (finally), only time will tell. We'll find out together.

Research: Smell something funny? You might be STRESSED: Neutral scents become unpleasant when you're under pressure

You might be aware of your heart pounding and even your hands shaking in times of extreme stress.

And now scientists have found that scents smelling unusual can also be an indicator of anxiety.

Humans’ sense of smell is affected when we are anxious, with stress re-wiring the brain so that scents don’t smell right, according to a new study.

Previously neutral smells become unpleasant and the greater the stress, the larger the change in smell, scientists claim.

Wen Li, a professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, used brain imaging to reveal how anxiety or stress can rewire the brain, linking centres of emotion and smell-processing to make typically benign smells foul stenches.

For the study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, subjects were made anxious by showing them disturbing pictures and text of subjects like car crashes and war.

The study found that this transformed neutral odours to distasteful ones, which the scientists explained could fuel a feedback loop heightening distress and leading to clinical issues like anxiety and depression.

‘After anxiety induction, neutral smells become clearly negative,’ professor Li said.

‘People experiencing an increase in anxiety show a decrease in the perceived pleasantness of odours. It becomes more negative as anxiety increases.’

Using behavioural techniques and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Professor Li's team looked at the brains of 12 human subjects with induced anxiety as they processed known neutral odours.

Before entering the fMRI scanner where participants were shown a series of disturbing pictures and text, subjects were exposed to and rated a panel of neutral smells.

In the course of the experiment, the scientists observed that two distinct and typically independent circuits of the brain - one dedicated to olfactory processing, the other to emotion - become intimately intertwined under conditions of anxiety.

After anxiety induction and the imaging process, subjects were asked again to rate the panel of neutral smells, and most assigned negative responses to smells they previously rated as neutral.
Professor Li said: ‘In typical odour processing, it is usually just the olfactory system that gets activated, but when a person becomes anxious, the emotional system becomes part of the olfactory processing stream.’

Although those two systems of the brain are right next to each other, under normal circumstances there is limited crosstalk between the two.

However, under conditions of induced anxiety, the Wisconsin team observed the emergence of a unified network cutting across the two systems.

The results could be used to uncover the biological mechanisms at play during periods of anxiety.

Professor Li said: ‘We encounter anxiety and as a result we experience the world more negatively.

‘The environment smells bad in the context of anxiety. It can become a vicious cycle, making one more susceptible to a clinical state of anxiety as the effects accumulate.

‘It can potentially lead to a higher level of emotional disturbances with rising ambient sensory stress.’
